When I chose Iceland to come to study as exchange, I did not know much about Iceland and it was a completely new country for me. However, I found some similarities between Japan and Iceland, for example both countries are islandic countries and they have volcanoes and hot springs. That is why I thought it would be interesting to live in Iceland and lean about its culture, so I decided to come to Iceland. Now after my stay in Iceland for a year, I can say with confident that it was a very meaningful year for me and Iceland gave me a lot of things.
I came to Iceland one month before the university began in order to join the language course in Westfjord and I learned Icelandic for the first time there. Learning Icelandic was difficult but it was very good to live in a countryside and study there, because the life and landscape there were completely different from Reykjavík. After that I have kept learning Icelandic by taking a course called Icelandic the basics at university. In that class I learned more about grammer but it was hard for me to make a good balance of studying Icelandic and other subjects. Also, it was the only Icelandic course which I could take as an exchange student, so I took the same course again in the next semester as well. It was good for me to review all the things because that made me easier to remember and I got more used to Icelandic. My Icelandic avility is not so good yet, but I can feel that I understand more and more than before little by little so I am going to keep on learning Icelandic.
At University of Iceland I have studied mainly Icelandic culture. I took a course called Being Icelandic and I learned a lot about Icelandic culture, history and folk beliefs. I found it very interesting to study about folk beliefs and folktales in Iceland because I felt it was similar in Japan. That is because we also have folk tales which have been kept telling since many years ago in Japan and supernatural creatures are also popular and they can be recognized as a part of Japanese culture. I knew that many Icelandic people believe in trolls and elves, but I learned more details and read many stories in this course and that made me more interested in folk beliefs in Iceland. I wrote an essay by comparing folk beliefs in Iceland and in Japan for the course and I found it was very interesting, so I would like to deepen the knowledge about it and use it for my graduation thesis of Ritsumeikan University.
Furthermore, I have been working as a volunteer at the Japanese language school to teach children Japanese every Saturday for a year. It was a great experience to teach children Japanese and also to get to know the Japanese community in Iceland. For example, thanks to a Japanese woman who studies master degree at the university, I got a chance to study about inclusive education. Inclusive education is very popular in Iceland and it is the key and the basic of education, but it is not so well spread in Japan yet. Therefore throughout the course I considered how inclusive education could be done more successfully in Japan and what Japan could learn from Icelandic education system. In the class I visited Háteigsskóli and it was great to get the opportunity to talk with the principle of the school and to hear about how the school has been working with inclusive education. Also, I visited an English class because I take teaching program to teach English to junior high and high school students in Japan, and it was very good opportunity to see the real situation in Iceland.
Throughout the year I spent in Iceland, I learned many things and I gained my experience a lot. Especially, thanks to the Watanabe scholarship, I was able to experience more things, for example the language course in Westfjord. Also, I was able to travel around Iceland many times and see the differences of the wonderful nature between summer and winter. That is one of the biggest reason why I fell in love with Iceland so I feel really grateful for that. Moreover, I made many good friends by traveling together and we shared a lot of cultural differences and I learned many things from friends who major in different subject as well. I would love to come back if I have another chance, because I want to study Icelandic folk beliefs and Icelandic more as I mentioned before, and also I got more interested in geology in Iceland by traveling around. Therefore I sincerely appreciate the Watanabe Trust Fund for giving me the great opportunity to study in Iceland for a year and I really hope I will be able to come back to Iceland to study more.

日本にいたときアイスランドは私にとって未知の国でした。しかしアイスランドと日本はどちらも島国で火山や温泉があり、少し似ているところがあるかもしれないとアイスランドの文化に興味を持ち、交換留学先に選びました。とはいうものの、正直な一番の理由は人と違うところに行きたいという単純なものでした。しかし一年間の留学を経た今、自信を持ってアイスランドに来てよかったと言えます。
私は、ウェストフィヨルドでのアイスランド語の語学コースに参加するために大学が始まる一か月前にアイスランドに来ました。そこでアイスランド語を初めて学び、レイキャビクとはまた違う、地方での生活を経験しました。その後も大学でアイスランド語の勉強を続けましたが、アイスランド語専攻ではなかったので他の授業の勉強との両立が少し難しかったです。また交換留学生として受講できるアイスランド語のクラスは一つだけだったので、二セメスター続けて同じクラスを受講しましたが、基本を繰り返し復習できたのでよかったです。私のアイスランド語の能力はまだまだですが、少しずつ会話が理解できるようになっているのがわかるので、これからも勉強を続けようと思っています。
アイスランド大学で私は主にアイスランドの文化について勉強しました。アイスランドの文化や歴史、民間信仰についてのクラスが一番印象に残っています。アイスランドで妖精の存在が信じられていることはよく知られていますが、この授業でもっと具体的に学びたくさんのお話を読んで、日本での妖怪の話と似ているものがあるなと感じました。この授業のレポートのためにアイスランドと日本での民間信仰を調べて比較したのがとても興味深かったので、その分野についての知識をより深めて立命館大学での卒業論文に発展させたいと考えています。
さらに、私は毎週土曜日に日本語教室で子供たちに日本語を教えるボランティアをしていました。自分の母国語を人に教えるということで新たな発見を経験し、特に子供特有の視点からの質問等は新鮮でした。また、日本語教室を通してアイスランドでの日本人コミュニティに入ることができたのもとてもよかったです。例えば、そこで知り合った日本人の大学院生の方のおかげで、インクルーシブ教育についてのクラスを開講してもらうことができました。インクルーシブ教育はアイスランドではとても広く行われていますが、日本はまだ準備が追いついていません。インクルーシブ教育の考え方は教育の基本でありとても重要なので、このクラスを通して日本でインクルーシブ教育を行うにはどうすればよいのか考えました。また、インクルーシブ教育が実際に行われている学校を訪れ、校長先生とお話しすることもできました。私は日本で中学校、高校での英語教員の免許取得を目指しているので、その学校で英語のクラスを訪れアイスランドでの英語教育の現場をみることができたのもとても貴重な経験でした。この経験を通して学んだことを日本に持ち帰り、日本での教育、特に英語教育をインクルーシブにする助けになれることを願います。
アイスランドでの一年間の留学を通して、私はとてもたくさんのことを学びいろいろな経験をしました。特に、この渡辺信託基金からの奨学金のおかげでウェストフィヨルドでのアイスランド語のコースに参加することができ、また、アイスランドをたくさん旅行することができました。夏と冬で違う姿をみせる大自然に魅了されアイスランドに恋し、一緒にレンタカーを借りて旅行することでたくさん大切な友達もでき、彼らとそれぞれの文化を共有し違う専攻について学ぶこともできました。そんな素敵な思い出を作らせてくれたアイスランドに、また機会があればぜひ戻ってきたいと思っています。なぜなら、アイスランドの民間信仰やアイスランド語をもっと勉強したいのはもちろんのこと、旅行をきっかけに地質学にも興味を持ったからです。アイスランドで一年間たくさんのことを経験し学ぶというとても貴重な機会をくださった渡辺信託基金に改めて感謝するとともに、この留学で得たものを日本に持ち帰り、またアイスランドに帰って来られることを心から願います。
