When I was in Japan, Iceland was a total new country for me. In addition, Icelandic literature was not familiar to me though I was a student of the Faculty of Letters, Arts and Sciences at the Waseda University. However After I read Under the Glacier by Halldór Laxness in Japanese at the University Library, I got great interested in Icelandic modern and contemporary literature. Furthermore, I wanted to research Icelandic performing arts because I have studied plays at the Waseda University. Unfortunately, there are few Icelandic classes throughout Japan. So I would have done nothing otherwise than come to Iceland to study Icelandic modern and contemporary literature. By good fortune, I have been studying Icelandic at the University of Iceland as a Japanese student awarded the scholarship from the Watanabe Trust Fund.
From the fall semester of 2012, I attend Practical Diploma of Icelandic as a Second Language. One of the most advantageous classes is Pronunciation and Speech. In this class, I learn how to pronounce Icelandic letters in details: shape of one’s mouth and how to trill one’s tongue. Further, the class helped me to learn Icelandic expression in a daily life and also to hear difference of Icelandic bowels. It is very helpful that teachers sometimes speak Icelandic in classes though Language of institute is English, according to the course catalogue. Icelandic pronunciation is very different from that of Japanese and I barely hear difference of Icelandic bowels. For example, I cannot hear difference between ö and u.
It was a pity that I was not able to take a class about Icelandic literature during this academic year. Those classes are in only Icelandic. In addition, I am still unable to read literary works by myself in Icelandic. It is true that I can read them with assistance by my friends or with a dictionary and books for Icelandic children are easy to read but my Icelandic is not enough to take a class about Icelandic literature. However a professor Jón Karl Helgason, who is my supervisor during my stay, told me some books that are helpful to know history of Icelandic literature from medieval age to present. Unfortunately, I took no class by him, but I feel grateful towards him for helping me to teach myself about Icelandic culture. And the books caught me interested in Icelandic literature more and I would like to study an influence on Icelandic literature by surrealism.
I had many good opportunities to research performing arts in Iceland by going LÓKAL and some arts festivals. From a personal point of view, movies are more popular and prosperous than theatrical arts. Moreover, the way I see it that it is too bad that theatre plays are rarely published in Iceland except for translations by famous foreign playwrights. Actually, Macbeth by William Shakespeare is only the book which has been published in 2012 and there are more movie festivals in Iceland than those of performing arts.
I have been helping as a volunteer every Saturday to teach young Icelanders Japanese. That is great experience for me because there are some children who speaks only Icelandic and I study living Icelandic from them as they learn Japanese from teachers. I learned some expressions and words that are not taught at the University, and the children told me how they are at schools in Iceland and they show me how they become to talk in their second language. It is true that a process of learning a second language in childhood is different from that for adults however there are some ways that children do are very beneficial to learn language also for adults. For example, to remember lyrics in an original language then sing a song over and over again.
I could not have experienced these, as going LÓKAL and volunteer in Iceland society, if I was in Japan. Not only study at the University of Iceland but also these experiences will help me a lot to study and to introduce Icelandic culture into Japan in the future. I feel very grateful towards teachers and friends for assisting me in a fruitful study and a dairy life and towards Watanabe Trust Fund for giving me this opportunity to study in Iceland. I sincerely hope that my experience as a student at the University of Iceland would contribute to a relation between Iceland and Japan.

日本にいた頃、アイスランドという国は、私にとってまったくの未知でした。くわえて、早稲田大学文化構想学部文芸・ジャーナリズム論系に在籍してはいましたが、アイスランド文学への馴染みも、まったくありませんでした。しかし、大学図書館でハルドウル・ラクスネス『極北の秘教』の日本語訳を読んでからというもの、私は、アイスランドの近現代文学に興味を持つようになりました。また、同時に、アイスランドにおける舞台芸術についても興味が出たのですが、それは、アイスランドに興味をもちだしたときに大学で演劇についての授業を受講していたからでもあります。日本にいたままではアイスランド文学についての勉強はできなかったでしょうが、幸運にも現在私は、渡部信託基金の日本人奨学生として国立アイスランド大学で、アイスランド語の勉強をしています。
2012年の秋学期から、「外国人のためのアイスランド語コース」のプラクティカル・ディプロマに所属しているのですが、そこで受けた授業のなかで最も有益だったのは、「発音と会話」という授業です。どのようにアイスランドの文字を発音するのかを、たとえば口の形や舌の位置などをはじめとして、詳細に習いました。さらに授業は、日常でつかうアイスランド語の表現だけでなく、基礎として必要なアイスランド語の母音の聞き分けにも役立ちます。シラバスには、授業での使用言語が英語、と書かれてはいるものの、ときおり教師がアイスランド語を使うことも、アイスランド語学習にはよかったように思います。というのも、アイスランド語と日本語の母音の数や発音の仕方がかなり異なること、たとえばuとöの聞き分けが非常に難しいことなどがあるためです。
ただ、今年度、現在までの留学において、アイスランド文学についての授業を取れなかったのは、心残りではあります。それは、アイスランド文学についての授業がアイスランド語で行われていることと、まだ私がアイスランド語を十分に使えないことが原因です。確かに、アイスランド語の文学作品を、友人の助けや辞書と共に読むことはできますし、子供用の本を読むことは難しくありませんが、授業を受けるほどには、まだアイスランド語能力がありません。ただその一方で、指導教授であるヨウン・カール・ヘルガソン氏が、中世から現代までのアイスランド文学史についての本など、いくつかの本を教えてくれたことで、自主手的にアイスランド文学を勉強することができました。残念ながら、今年度、ヨウン教授の授業を取ることはできませんでしたが、それでも私の興味に関する本を教示していただき、それによってアイスランドの近現代文学について一層の興味を持つことができたころに、非常に感謝しています。そして現在私は、アイスランド文学におけるシュルレアリスムの影響にとても関心があります。
また、「ロウカル」や他の芸術祭に参加することで、アイスランドの舞台芸術について調べる機会も多くありました。私見ですが、アイスランドでは舞台よりも映画の方が、人気があり、盛んなように思われます。また、有名な海外古典などをのぞき、戯曲がほぼ出版されないことも惜しく思います。2012年では、書籍として出版された戯曲は、ウィリアム・シェイクスピア『マクベス』のみであり、アイスランドには舞台祭よりも映画祭の方が多くあります。
私は、毎週土曜日にボランティアとして日本語教室に通うという貴重な経験をしています。そこには、アイスランド語しか話せない小さな子どもたちもおり、彼らが先生方から日本語を学ぶように、私は彼らから生きたアイスランド語を学ぶことができました。子どもたちは、アイスランドの学校はどのようなところか、それをどう感じているのか、また、大学では教えられない日常語なども教えてくれ、なにより私は学生ながら、彼らから、どうやって第二言語を覚えるのかの一部過程をみるという貴重な経験をしています。ただ、子どもが外国語を覚える過程と、大人が外国語を習得する過程が異なるのは確かです。けれども、子どもたちが行う言語学習法のなかで、いくつか大人にも有益なものがあります。それは、たとえば、ある歌の歌詞を覚え、原語でその歌を何度も何度もくり返し歌うというものでした。
私は、日本にいたままでは、「ロウカル」に行くことや、アイスランド社会でのボランティア活動などといった貴重な経験することは、生涯できなかったでしょう。大学での勉強だけでなく、上記のような経験は、将来アイスランド文学を研究、紹介するときに大いに役立つはずです。私の留学生活を充実するものにしてくださったアイスランド大学の先生方や友人たち、そして何より貴重な機会をくださった渡辺信託基金に心から感謝いたします。私の留学生としての経験を活かし、日本とアイスランドの関係に貢献していければと真摯に思っております。
